Resurgent Daniil Medvedev Secures First Championship in Nearly 30 Months
Nineteen of the Russian's 21 championships have been achieved on hard surfaces
A comeback the Russian player won his initial championship for nearly 30 months with success over Frenchman Moutet in the competition championship match.
Medvedev, a ex- number one, has had a challenging period, managing just a single victory at the major tournaments and suffering a difficult moment at the New York tournament.
The player's varied form on the professional circuit - and issues with his service game in specific - led to him dropping out of the world's top 10 and finally separating with former mentor Gilles Cervara.
Currently collaborating with his coach and Rohan Goetzke, Medvedev has gradually advanced in the past month - peaking in a hard-fought 7-5 4-6 6-3 victory over opponent Moutet.
This marks Medvedev's initial trophy after the Rome competition and initial on a hard surface after spring of the previous year.
Victory also means the Russian has secured 21 victories at 21 different competitions.
"This marks the first occasion I'm at a tournament with my both daughters simultaneously, so to secure a trophy is really nice," commented world number 14 Daniil Medvedev.
"This championship is in honour of my second daughter Victoria, because the maiden victory I won when my older daughter her name was delivered was for her."
Medvedev, the 2021 US Open champion, had lost his past six championship matches, featuring in that event earlier this year.
The player's retrieving approach and regular reactions on the playing surface had prompted observers to wonder if his skill to perform at the elite level was finished.
But the athlete has made changes in the last few weeks, making an effort to advance forward and perform assertively, supported by an enhanced serve.
Medvedev fought back from a break down in the initial set against the tricky opponent, taking 4 of the concluding five games to go ahead.
Both players traded break points in the following set before the challenger, attempting for his initial professional championship, gained dominance to create a decider.
The opponent rescued 4 early opportunities in a tight deciding set before the champion secured a break to fifteen to serve for the match.
Appropriately, the winner secured victory with a point at the net area, with the Frenchman incapable to handle a shot after over two and a half hours.
