Matteo Cancellieri Displays Glimpses of Exceptional Talent in Bright Spot for Unstable Lazio

The mood at their home stadium was anything but joyful during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a team that had conceded ten goals while netting just two in their previous five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were finishing their most recent demonstration in a long-running conflict with club owner Claudio Lotito.

A Season Unraveling?

Was Lazio's season unraveling, or did there exist a thread holding it together in the first place? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri to lead the team in the summer transfer window, but then he to later acknowledge that the board had failed to disclose a ban on new signings they were facing for accounting issues. Speculation that he could resign were without basis, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "swindled" him.

The Roman club were just as chaotic on the pitch as behind the scenes, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing their other opening fixtures, including the Rome derby. From one game to the next, it's been difficult to determine if they're getting better or imploding.

The Youngster's Unforeseen Comeback

A single player kept smiling amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to feature for Lazio this season. He completed last season with Parma on loan and, early this summer, his owning club were advocating for him to extend his stay temporarily. The transfer ban led to a change of plans. Lazio could not afford to reduce their roster with no new signings.

He joined originally during Sarri's previous tenure, then a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 Serie A appearances with the club in 2022-23, almost all of those from the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who left at the end of that season, later stated Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri was destined for stardom only to bench him consistently."

Finding His Best Role

It's possible the coach was still trying to identify the exact type of his skill set. Originally described as an attacking winger upon signing, Cancellieri nevertheless spent much of that season as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile at No 9. During 63 outings during spells with Empoli and Parma in the past two years, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
