EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
